Reiersen anticipating ‘last round thriller’ in CrossCar/Crosskart’s titanic title tussle

The CrossCar/Crosskart title race has been the closest and hardest fought on the RallyX Nordic presented by Cooper Tires bill in 2021.

With just one round remaining, the three contenders – Patrik Hallberg, Jimmie Österberg and Isak Reiersen – are all tied up, each on 117 points after their worst score of the season so far has been dropped.

After finishing the 2020 season in third place and remaining a front-runner throughout, Reiersen was a man on a mission in 2021 kicking off his title bid with a victory and third place in Rounds 1 and 2 respectively at the Danish double-header in Nysum.

Höljes, meanwhile, would be a meeting of two halves for the EKS JC ace, with a puncture in his semi-final for Round 3 putting pay to his efforts and halting his charge.

He swiftly bounced back to take a commanding victory at the next round and reignite his championship challenge, chased home by the ever-present Österberg.

Similarly, the third double-header event at Ouluzone, Finland would yield mixed results for the Swede, recording a second-place finish for Round 5.

Round 6, however, could prove pivotal in the eventual outcome of the championship, with Reiersen and Österberg getting tangled up in a dramatic first corner incident in the final race of the weekend, leaving Hallberg to pick up second place and make up considerable ground in the standings.

That tees up a scintillating last-round showdown in prospect, effectively re-setting the championship for one event at Arvika, Sweden to crown the 2021 CrossCar/Crosskart champion.

“The season has been great for me,” said Reiersen. “Actually, the plan was to take the step over to do a full rally campaign this year, but due to the Covid situation in Sweden it hasn’t been possible to host any rallies. But after some good negotiations with Joel [Christoffersson] and EKS JC we could make another season in the CrossCar/Crosskart possible.

“And what a year it has been! Coming in to the first race in Nysum and be able to win it with a new Crosscar was just amazing. I’ve been fairly consistent, just a puncture in Round 3’s semi-final in Höljes and a DNF in the final of Round 6 in Finland have been the major problems.

“Overall I´m very happy with the season and the performance from my part. We have done everything we can at the races, trying to get the new Crosscar on the right tracks as fast as possible. We’re in for a last-round thriller. The top three all on 117 points means it will be maximum attack from the first qualifying. I´ve been in this situation where the last race is the decider a number of times before and I´m ready for it!

“Arvika is a track I know well, but it is the home-track for Jimmie [Österberg] which means he will be fast and will be hard to catch. Also, Patrik [Hallberg] was fast there last year so it will be an interesting and a really fun race! It´s a tough track, and I think in the end it will all depend on how much you dare to push, which I know from last year, I have no problems doing!

“The development from my part has just been really good this season, especially when it´s so tight at the top and the level in this series is so high. You constantly need to be at your best and find the last bit of speed.”

The RallyX Nordic presented by Cooper Tires Championship reaches its dramatic conclusion with Round 7 at Arvika in Sweden (August 13-15). Remember to catch all the action live and for free on the RallyX TV YouTube Channel.
