While Pontus Oskarsson was competing in the Junior CrossCar category for the fourth year running, the Swedish driver took advantage of the 2024 season to put in a career-best performance, finishing seventh overall. Nevertheless, the driver from Värmland seems determined to move up to a new category.
Pontus Oskarsson’s best performance of the season came at Race 1 in Nysum, where he finished fifth and scored a total of 20 points. The last few months have seen him take another step forward in his development.
While his best result in his career was 12th overall in 2021, the Speecar driver has managed to finish in the top 10 of the category eight times out of the ten races on the RallyX championship calendar.
His consistency was more than evident, even if Pontus admits that the content of his season could have been even more brilliant.
In fact, Pontus has qualified on the front row of the semi-finals four times in the last four races of the championship, but the Swede has only managed to reach the final on two occasions.
‘I have to admit that I wasn’t always very successful during the finals,’ points out Pontus Oskarsson.
‘We’ve never really understood why, but our starts have never been the best. Even though our speed has always been good, we know that it’s always difficult to recover the time lost in the first few metres of the race. I wasn’t very successful, but maybe we didn’t play with everything the regulations allow. I know that you can make changes to the exhausts to improve efficiency and to a few engine details, but as far as I’m concerned, everything was completely from the factory. So, apart from a certain lack of success, perhaps this area also cost me better performances this year.’
One thing is certain: while his seventh place in the championship does not really reflect his true speed, Pontus Oskarsson could well take advantage of the 2025 season to try something new.
Indeed, the young Swede is now set to follow in the footsteps of his father, Mats Oskarsson.
‘I’m 15 and I think it’s time for me to go and see what’s being done elsewhere. For the moment, our aim is to be able to enter the Supercar Lites category next year. In any case, this transition to the Lites would certainly allow me to take a new step in my development as a driver. I’ve already been able to do two test sessions with this car and now that the season is over, our strategy is to come back for two days of driving at Höljes and assess how things are going for me.’
While the winter break should help Pontus to fine-tune his approach, there is no doubt that his potential move into Supercar Lites would be a welcome addition to the category.
