With Janis Baumanis absent in Finland, Maiko Tamm heads into the KymiRing round as the leader of the RallyX North standings. It’s a position the young Estonian seems to be handling with composure and confidence.
After securing back-to-back podiums last month in Latvia, Tamm couldn’t have hoped for a stronger start to his season. With 50 points out of a possible 60, the TT Motorsport driver already holds a 10- and 16-point lead over his closest rivals, Viktor Vranckx and Ulrik Linnemann.
Not that this early lead is adding any pressure.
“In Riga, we saw our pace improve lap after lap. For now, we just need to keep fighting. There’s no point focusing on the title this early. The goal is to take each race as it comes and not skip any steps. We’ll see how far this approach can take us.”
As for this weekend’s race at KymiRing, Tamm is approaching it with genuine enthusiasm.
“Just like in Riga, I’ve arrived here with a really good feeling. We did a lot of work before the season opener in Latvia, so I think we’re well prepared for KymiRing. The first corner looks incredible, so now it’s time to race, time to fight. The track seems very fast with plenty of technical corners. It’s a bit tricky, but we’ll know more after the first practice,” Tamm said Friday morning.
“I did a track walk on Thursday when I arrived, and I have to admit, the layout really impressed me. I actually walked the lap three times thinking, ‘Wow, what is this track?!’ Honestly, I just wanted the race to start right then.”
While gravel dominates the surface at KymiRing, Tamm feels right at home on the mixed-terrain layout of the Finnish circuit.
“I’m not sure if a driver alone can make the full difference here, but one thing is clear: you need to be a complete driver on this track. It’s not just about being fast on gravel — you also need a strong technical team to help fine-tune the setup and find the right balance for the asphalt sections, too. But I’m not worried.”
“I feel ready to go to war. That first corner could play a huge role in shaping the race. We’ll see how the drivers handle it, but I’m convinced it will be one of the key moments of the weekend.”
