Reigning CrossCar Junior champion and a newcomer to the senior category, Carl Svedlund will arrive at Nysum as the RallyX North championship leader. With four races remaining, the Swede holds a 14-point advantage over Espen Isaksætre, while Riku Huuhka and defending champion Thomas Eek Murstad remain firmly within striking distance.
After stepping up from CrossCar Junior, Svedlund has emerged as one of the standout revelations of the 2026 season. His move to the senior ranks immediately made an impression. Eliminated in the semi-finals of the opening RallyX South round at Valkenswaard, the JC Raceteknik driver responded the very next day by claiming his maiden victory in the category.
His RallyX North debut proved less spectacular. Sixth in the opening round at Tierp before finishing fifth in the following two races, Svedlund went through the first three events without reaching the podium. Even so, he continued to score valuable points while avoiding any significant setbacks.
Consistency has been his greatest strength so far. Svedlund is the only driver in the category to have reached the final in each of the first six RallyX North rounds, while consistently demonstrating the pace required to make the difference when it matters most.
His victory in the second Honkajoki race sparked a run of three consecutive podium finishes. Third in the opening race at Älvsbyn, he returned the following day to claim another victory, bringing his tally to two wins from the last three races. With 53 points collected from a possible 60 in Sweden, he secured the biggest points haul of the weekend.
Already leading the standings after Honkajoki, Svedlund extended his advantage over Isaksætre from four to 14 points. It is a significant step forward, but not enough to approach the final two double-headers with any real comfort.
Second in the standings on 129 points, Isaksætre remains his closest challenger. The Norwegian won the opening race at Älvsbyn but still surrendered a further ten points to Svedlund over the course of the weekend. Behind him, Huuhka and Murstad are tied on 123 points, leaving just six points separating second from fourth place.
Joonatan Ylilammi also remains firmly in contention. Fifth on 112 points, the Finn trails Svedlund by 31. As a result, the top five drivers are covered by just 31 points, only one point more than the maximum 30 available from a single race.
The first meaningful gap now appears behind Ylilammi. Vetle Try and Janis Baumanis are tied on 89 points and now trail the championship leader by 54. While the deficit remains mathematically recoverable, Nysum could represent their final realistic opportunity to close the gap to the leading group.
With 60 points available in Denmark out of the 120 still on offer before the end of the season, Svedlund cannot afford to adopt a conservative approach. His 14-point lead gives him a small margin for error, but certainly not enough to withstand a poor weekend.
More importantly, the Swede stands just four races away from achieving something no driver has managed before in RallyX. Since the introduction of the CrossCar Junior category, no reigning Junior champion has gone on to win the senior title in the very next season.
Svedlund has already shown that he possesses both the speed and consistency required to fight for the championship. Now he must prove he can cope with the pressure applied by three more experienced rivals. Nysum should reveal whether he is ready for that challenge.
