Having started his motorsport journey in motocross, young Finnish driver Matias Toivio is now set to take his first steps in the RallyX Championship.
At the wheel of a Speedcar Wonder, the rookie will launch his season at Valkenswaard on April 25–26 in the CrossCar Junior category.
As he prepares for his debut campaign, the Finnish driver approaches this new challenge with enthusiasm, focused on learning rather than setting overly ambitious targets.
“I’m very excited about competing in my first RallyX championship,” says Matias.
Before making the switch to CrossCar, Toivio built his foundations in motocross, a transition sparked by a key encounter.
“I started in motocross when I was younger, but it was a friend of my father, whose son got into crosskart, who made me want to give it a try. I did a test, and then we decided to get our first car.”
However, it was from the sidelines that everything truly clicked. Attending the KymiRing event last year, the young Finn was struck by the spectacle, ultimately convincing him to take the plunge.
“I went to the KymiRing race last year, and I found it really impressive. That’s what made me want to get into RallyX.”
For his first season, Toivio expects to face several rallycross-specific challenges, particularly when it comes to starts and in-race strategy.
“My main challenges will probably be managing the starts properly, positioning myself well on the grid, and choosing the right moment to take the joker lap.”
In that context, the Finnish driver is taking a measured approach, with goals primarily centred around consistency and progression.
“My goals are simple: finish races and avoid finishing last.”
A cautious mindset that doesn’t rule out greater ambitions in the longer term.
“For now, I don’t have any big ambitions, other than hopefully winning a race in RallyX one day.”
