Ekström returns to Supercar for RallyX Höljes weekend

Former World Rallycross Champion and double DTM title-winner Mattias Ekström will make a shock return to rallycross this weekend in the RallyX season-opener at Höljes.

Swedish star Ekström claimed the World RX title in 2016, and his EKS team worked alongside JC Raceteknik last year to help Johan Kristoffersson claim his fourth World RX Drivers’ crown.

The two Swedish rallycross legends will now go head-to-head for their own teams in the RallyX season-opener at Höljes, Ekström racing an Audi S1 Supercar for his own EKS team, alongside regular driver Enzo Ide.

Ekström has made the late entry to the event following victory at Peu in the opening round of the Pure ETCR series last weekend. He also contested the legendary Dakar in January with Audi.

The Swede last raced in RallyX at the end of the 2019 season, where drove his 2016 title-winning Audi S1 at Tierp in Sweden. Through the event he challenged for victory, but then stepped out of the final to help team mate Robin Larsson’s ultimately successful title bid.

He will be gunning for victory this weekend, at the circuit where he claimed his first-ever World RX victory in 2014, and made his European Rallycross debut in 2013.

“I had a good last weekend in Pure ETCR, and I must say I was tempted to try and do one rallycross race per season. When I saw the grid for the grid for the Höljes RallyX opener, I thought that is quite tempting to do,” said Ekström. “I thought ‘one thing at a time’ so I did the race last weekend in Peu, which went really well and I was just too excited to do a bit of rallycross. I still love the format, the cars and also to go there together with Enzo to have a nice weekend with him, it will be exciting. I can’t wait for the racing action to start!”

Höljes hosts the first two 2022 RallyX rounds this weekend on May 14-15. You can get tickets to watch the amazing rallycross action here.

All of the RallyX 2022 action will be broadcast live and for free on RallyX TV YouTube!
