Filip Thorén bets on Supercar and Pro-AM category

After a 2023 campaign focused on the FIA RX2e championship, Filip Thorén has confirmed his commitment to the RallyX championship for the 2024 season.

A former competitor in the Swedish Junior Rallycross Championship, where he finished sixth overall in 2020 at the wheel of a BMW E36 during his first season, the 21-year-old Swedish driver has since split his time between his domestic series and the FIA RX2e.

After three races in the electric category and a runner-up spot in the Swedish Junior Championship behind Oskar Hellstrom in 2022, Filip Thorén took advantage of 2023 to compete in his first full FIA RX2e campaign.

With three final qualifications, the Swedish driver was able to finish his season in the top 6 in FIA RX2e. However, next year, Filip will discover the Supercar category at the wheel of a VW Polo from Hedström Motorsport.

“Since the end of 2021 I’ve been very active in the FIA RX2e championship. I was able to participate in a few races in 2021 and 2022 before competing for a full season in 2023,” says Filip.

“However, we soon realized that the cost of a season in RX2e was more or less similar to the budget you’d need to commit to a Supercar program, so it was mainly for this reason that we decided to move to this category.”

“In fact, it all happened very quickly. We saw on Facebook that Peter Hedström was organizing a test session with one of his VW Polo cars at Höljes and we jumped at the chance. That’s what convinced us to buy the car.”

One thing is for sure, Filip’s decision to compete in the RallyX championship is a logical one.

“With two races per weekend, the RallyX championship allows us to do a lot of mileage. That’s why we decided to do a full season in 2024. It’s a very good championship that will allow us to learn as much as possible.”

“If the goal is to compete in the Pro-Am category, I know that if I manage to perform well, I may have the opportunity to qualify for a final in the Pro category and gain even more experience. However, from my point of view, the 2023 season will mainly be a development year. We’ll test again next spring and see how things develop during the season.”
