Open 2WD: Viktor Johansson hails the introduction of a Pro Am Championship

From the 2024 season onwards, the Open 2WD category is expected to look very attractive in the RallyX championship. In fact, just as Supercars have had their own Pro and Pro Am championship since this year, the same will apply to Open 2WD drivers.

The concept is simple: to maximize the chances of engines up to 2400cc, drivers will be able to opt for either the Pro or Pro Am category.

An adjustment that should enhance the interest of drivers lacking the engine power required to challenge the championship’s top contenders.

As in Supercar, Pro and Pro Am drivers will continue to compete together in the qualifying heats and semi-finals, while a final entirely reserved for Pro Am drivers will enable them to score points towards a title that will be specifically dedicated to them.

Viktor Johansson, who claimed the championship crown in 2022 and then the runner-up spot in 2023, makes no secret of the fact that the concept could be a game-changer for the Open 2WD category.

“The addition of this Pro Am championship in Open 2WD is a very good thing,” points out Viktor Johansson.

“From my point of view, it’s the best solution for expanding the Open 2WD category. I hope that the addition of a Pro Am championship will encourage as many drivers as possible to join us on the basis of a full program in 2024. In Finland this year, we managed to assemble a top-quality field with an extremely high standard, but on the other hand it was more difficult at some of the other venues.”

“With this Pro Am championship, I’m very hopeful that we’ll be able to attract a lot of drivers. If every weekend we could have as strong an opposition as we had in Kouvola this year, it would be really perfect. In any case, I’m convinced that the introduction of these Pro and Pro Am categories can only contribute positively to the Open 2WD category”.
